Historic Campus

When Randolph-Macon relocated to Ashland in 1868 from its early home in Boydton, Virginia, these historic buildings were the entirety of the campus, and they are still in use today. Washington-Franklin Hall (built in 1872), Pace-Armistead Hall (built in 1877), and Duncan Memorial Church (now called Old Chapel – erected in 1882) are all included on the National Register of Historic Places and form what is formally called the Jordan Wheat Lambert Historic Campus.

Washington-Franklin Hall is the home of the Department of History, Pace-Armistead Hall is where our studio arts program is centered, and Old Chapel – is home to art history and music classes, in particular. RMC is the oldest United Methodist-affiliated college in continuous use in the U.S. (Today, a new Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church nearby serves as the unofficial campus chapel.)

-Washington-Franklin Hall

Randolph-Macon’s very first building, Washington-Franklin Hall, charms visitors as our most historic landmark at 150 years old. Reputedly the first brick structure in the town of Ashland, Washington-Franklin Hall—known as “Wash-Frank” by Yellow Jackets—was the first building specifically erected for the College when it moved from Boydton to Ashland, Va.

So strong was the students’ desire for a new building dedicated to their learning that they put up most of the funds to build Wash-Frank themselves, led by Jordan Wheat Lambert, Class of 1872, then president of the Franklin Literary Society. Lambert and his fellow literary society members raised over $7,000 toward the building’s $12,954 construction costs, an impressive feat made possible in large part to the groups’ polished organizational and debate skills. (Those abilities would serve Lambert later in his career, as he went on to become a chemist who helped develop Listerine before founding the pharmaceutical company that marketed it.)
